Hilary Duff tells PEOPLE in an exclusive interview that she sings while running on the treadmill to keep her voice strong

"Using the treadmill and singing is really great for your endurance," the singer, who embarks on her The Lucky Me tour later this year, says

Other singers who have used treadmills for performance prep include Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato, Lizzo and Tate McRae

What makes for a perfect pop star? A discography of hit songs, a loyal legion of fans and singing while running on a treadmill, apparently.

Hilary Duff is heading on her The Lucky Me tour this summer, when she will perform some of her most iconic songs, as well as tracks from her new album, Luck... or Something.

And while fine-tuning the setlist, perfecting choreography and adding final touches to her outfits are must-dos before the concert series kicks off in June, Duff tells PEOPLE in an exclusive interview that one of her most important pre-tour preparations is making sure her voice is at its best.

How does she do that? "Using the treadmill and singing is really great for your endurance," Duff says. "[It's about] figuring out how to sing and what parts you can sing when your heart is really pounding."

"Maybe you've just done a little sprint on stage, or you've been dancing a little bit more, so it's definitely helpful for those songs," she adds.

Duff is one of several celebrities who have used the treadmill as a training tool to strengthen their voices.

Every day for six months before her record-breaking Eras Tour kicked off, Taylor Swift would sing her entire setlist while running on a treadmill. She told TIME in late 2023: ”Fast for fast songs, and a jog or a fast walk for slow songs."

Miley Cyrus has also done the same — as evidenced in one TikTok video in which she sang her Plastic Hearts fan-favorite "Angels Like You" — as has Demi Lovato, who prepped for her recently kicked off It's Not That Deep tour in the same way.

Lizzo has used the same tool, and she was even inspired to do so by Cyrus, 33, while Tate McRae filmed the music video for her song "Run for the Hills" on a treadmill. (For "six hours," the "Siren Sounds" musician said.)

Duff is in full fitness mode before her The Lucky Me tour. The mom of four is currently using, and a big fan of, the fitness app Ladder, which centers around structured strength training and coached workout plans.

"I love exercising and working out. It's been a part of my life for a really long time," Duff says. "Once I started using the app, I was blown away. I've told all my friends, it's seriously just the best. It's exactly the kind of style that I'm looking for: you have a trainer and it takes the guesswork out of fitness."

"You consistently have the same coach and they design your workouts for the week, so you hit all your body parts. But you can also go in and be like, 'Oh, I want extra of this,' or, 'I want less of this,' " the "Roommates" singer continues. "It just takes all the guessing out. I don't have to think about it."

"The thing that helps me with Ladder is that the plan's right there. I can't make any excuses because someone's doing the moves with me," adds Duff. "They're professionals who are trained in what they're doing, so they know how to design a perfect workout for your body and what you're looking for. It's seriously my favorite thing."

According to Duff, she gives her fitness routine "a lot more attention" now than she ever has before.

"I make it a priority in my life. It's part of my job, but also, it's great for me to feel strong, and it's important for my sleep," the Lizzie McGuire alum says.

"It's important for my endurance, my energy, for how I feel in my clothes. It's just something that I've prioritized a lot more," she continues.

For Duff, "A lot of my guilt around taking the time to do it has faded, because I know that if I'm not strong and feeling powerful, I'm not going to be able to be there for anyone in my family and show up for my job the way that I need to."

"It's something that's a non-negotiable for me. I need to train four times a week —and that's that," she tells PEOPLE.
