Meryl Streep joked about the length of the global press tour for The Devil Wears Prada 2 ahead of the N.Y.C. premiere

“We're only halfway done. I'll be on a gurney after it," Streep joked of the press tour, which has taken her to Mexico City, Tokyo, Seoul and more

Streep said she was surprised by all of the "anticipation" for the sequel

The end of the The Devil Wears Prada 2 press tour is not in sight for star Meryl Streep.

While appearing on Good Morning America on Monday, April 20 ahead of the film's New York City premiere, the Oscar-winning actress, 76, joked that she will “never be done” promoting the sequel to the 2006 original co-starring Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci.

Recalling how the ongoing press tour, which kicked off March 30, has already taken her around the globe, Streep told the GMA hosts, “We went to Mexico City, Tokyo, Seoul, Shanghai … I was in Shanghai, I didn't even have to fix my clock because now it's 8:15 at night. It's amazing.”

“We're only halfway done. I'll be on a gurney after it, but we're going to London next and then L.A. and then rehab or something,” joked the actress.

Later, as the show's hosts shared how to tune into the sequel's N.Y.C. premiere coverage, Streep buried her head in her hands and joked in an exasperated tone, "Oh my god, really? I'll never be done."

Elsewhere in the GMA appearance, Streep explained that a highlight of the world tour has been seeing the impact The Devil Wears Prada had on viewers, and how it shaped their lives.

“I mean, I think I must have met 200 young women journalists over the course of this global tour,” she said — women “who had said, ‘This first movie made me want to be a journalist, made me wanna dress up, made me want to have fun.' ”

“I mean, it's so optimistic, and I think that energy is retained in this one, in, in the face of everything,” she added of the forthcoming sequel.

The original Devil Wears Prada, based on Lauren Weisberger's book of the same name, follows Andy Sachs (Hathaway), a recent college grad pursuing a career in journalism. She works as an assistant to Miranda Priestly (Streep), editor-in-chief of fictional high-fashion magazine Runway, all while navigating relationships with her boyfriend (Adrian Grenier) and co-workers, Emily (Blunt) and Nigel (Tucci).

The sequel is set to follow Priestly “as she navigates her career amid the decline of traditional magazine publishing and as she faces off against Blunt's character, now a high-powered executive for a luxury group with advertising dollars that Priestly desperately needs,” per Variety.

As Streep has traveled the world to promote the forthcoming film — and had several standout fashion moments, like a cerulean blue number reminiscent of Sachs' sweater in the original — people have been “clamoring” for its release, the GMA hosts pointed out. Streep said on the morning show that she was a bit taken aback by the level of enthusiasm.

“That was the real surprise to me because I'm not online. I don't have Instagram or TikTok or any of those things so I don't know what's going on,” the Mamma Mia! actress said, reiterating that she “didn't realize” that there was so much “anticipation.”

“Kids were waiting, women were waiting, gay men were waiting — and regular men were waiting, because this was the first movie that I've ever done that straight men came up and said, ‘I know how you feel. I know how you feel in this movie.' ”

After the hosts laughed, she assured, “No, no, no, it's true. So that was nice.”

It's also a feat that the sequel film is coming out at all, according to Streep, who said that originally, “nobody wanted to do it.”

“They wanted to make a sequel from the minute it hit, and they were surprised that it was a hit because it was a chick flick, and they never think that they're going to do any business, but this did, and the next one was proposed, but we had to wait, wait, wait, wait, wait till the right script came.”

The Devil Wears Prada 2, which also stars Kenneth Branagh, Lucy Liu, Justin Theroux, B.J. Novak, Pauline Chalamet, Patrick Brammall, Caleb Hearon, Helen J. Shen and Conrad Ricamora, is in theaters May 1.

In addition to the sequel, Streep's upcoming projects include Netflix limited series The Corrections, among others.
