IEmerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights, her take on Emily Brontë’s 1847 classic, starring Margot Robbie as Catherine Earnshaw and Jacob Elordi as Heathcliff, hit theaters this weekend.

“I think there’s still so much argument about whether it is a love story or not; I personally believe that it is, it’s just a very complicated one,” the director told T&C. “I really wanted to make sure that it felt like an emotional sibling, in some ways, to the book—which meant that it was visceral and icky and complicated. But also, I really, really wanted to preserve as much of Brontë’s dialogue [as I could] because her dialogue is so exquisite. The proclamations of love in this book are just really transcendently beautiful. So as much as this [film] is an adaptation of the way the book made me feel, I suppose, and therefore quite a personal one, I really, really, wherever I could, didn’t want to deviate from what Brontë said.”

For those who may not want to see it in theaters (or just want to rewatch it again and again at home), Wuthering Heights will eventually land on streaming. As it is released by Warner Bros. Pictures, when it does, it will be available on HBO Max. Typically, Warner Bros. movies take between three and four months to arrive on the streaming platform, which means we’re looking at a May or June release date for Wuthering Heights. However, it could be available earlier on video on demand platforms, like Apple TV or Prime Video, in late March or April.
